Occult Wireless Charger

The device is a wireless charger designed to resemble a magical artifact, featuring an ouroboros, alchemical symbols, rotating rings with pseudo-script inscriptions, astrological signs, and more. When aligned, the device lights up—its power source left intentionally unclear. Like much of technology, it operates as a black box. As author Arthur C. Clarke wrote, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” This device is my attempt to bring the two back together.

Every day, we interact with technology that feels like magic—automatic doors, wireless earbuds, and glowing screens that respond to touch. While we call it technology, much of it is mysterious even to those who use it daily. Few people truly understand how these devices work, and in that sense, they function like modern magic. For my final project in Introduction to the Occult Sciences at Yale, taught by Professor Travis Zadeh, I created a device that explores this overlap.

The charger was designed in the CAD software Onshape and 3D printed using an Ultimaker 3 and Bambulab P1S printer. The first version used gold for the classical planets (left), while the final version used different colors. The charger is activated in the leftmost image, wirelessly charging another device.
